Here are my comments on the E30, for which I have a soft spot: My first E30 was a 1985 325e. Overall the car was very reliable, except that I had to replace the head at approx. 110k miles. I understand this is not uncommon with the old eta engine. My next E30 (and the only car I regret selling) was a 1989 325is.

Try to find a car owned by an older person that looks like they babied the car or at least did basic E30 maintenance on it. At this point, any running E30 you buy is either going to be a bargain at first and slowly turn into a restoration/rebuild money pit for at least a year or two to make up for years of deferred maintenance, or a ready-to
I guess that idle ranging around at startup was the engine trying to adapt to this leaky condition and to its' credit, after twenty seconds or so, got it done. In retrospect, I am impressed that it could. I have had several cars that ran badly on lesser leaks. Anyhoo, the dealer had the boot on the shelf for $37.
