1. Faulty sensor One of the most common reasons for the airbag light to turn on in Golf is a faulty sensor. The airbag system relies on a network of sensors to detect a crash and deploy the airbags. If one of these sensors is damaged or malfunctioning, it can cause the airbag light to turn on.
Some time ago I had the steering wheel off, and made the mistake of turning the ignition on. Since then the airbag light has been lit, but I seriously doubt there's a real fault. I've rechecked the wiring, and was careful during all work. I'm guessing the computer saw the missing bag when the ignition was on, and just needs to be reset.

I saw a potential solution on another blog, and tried it, and it was successful. Immobiliser icon flashing. Start the car normally. (It stops promptly of course). Leave key alone (i.e. in ignition, in "run" position) - sit tight and wait for 10-15 minutes. The immobiliser icon stops flashing. Start car normally.
